The simple answer to the question “what is IntelliPoint” is this: it's the software driver for Microsoft mice products. So if you have a Microsoft brand mouse and you want it to work properly, you need to get IntelliPoint. You can also use IntelliPoint to manage your mouse – access button settings, pointer options, and more.

IntelliPoint is available for Microsoft Windows operating system and for Apple Mac OS X. Installing IntelliPoint on a Windows PC is a very simple process: download a 19MB executable, run it, click through the instructions presented by a setup wizard. You will be done in little time and without putting too much work into it.

You will see multiple tabs at the top of the Mouse Properties window:
Buttons – choose what each mouse button does.
Pointers – change the look and size of the mouse cursor.
Pointer options – choose the pointer movers, enable the Snap To option, play with some visibility settings.
Wheel – enable/disable vertical scrolling, select a vertical scrolling speed, enable accelerated scrolling.
Hardware – view a list of devices connected to your machine.
Activities – set double-click speed, enable ClickLock.

To help you efficiently use and set up your mouse just the way you want, IntelliPoint comes with a detailed Mouse Help file.
And to help you use your mouse in a healthy manner, IntelliPoint comes with a Healthy Computing Guide.

IntelliPoint is offered by Microsoft for free.

IntelliPoint is meant for Microsoft mice and Intellitype is meant for Microsoft keyboards. But the two applications are a thing of the past. Microsoft unified the functionality they have to offer and rolled out IntelliPoint Mouse and Keyboard Center. Or to put it in other words, IntelliPoint has been succeeded by Mouse and Keyboard Center, a unified driver for all Microsoft mice and keyboards.

The simple truth of the matter is that you need IntelliPoint if you have a Microsoft mouse.

Pros

IntelliPoint is available for Windows and Mac. Installing IntelliPoint takes little time and effort. The tabbed Mouse Properties interface is easy to navigate. Use IntelliPoint to set up and configure your Microsoft mouse. IntelliPoint is a free application.

Cons

IntelliPoint was succeeded by Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center.
